I might be getting it all wrong

“I’ve been trying to meditate for a relatively long time (3 months) but I have realized just now that I might need to change my meditation technique.

Every time I try to focus on my breathing I get immediately distracted and if I’m not distracted I am actively thinking about my breathing and controlling it.

I’ve tried meditating for upwards of 30 minutes but I still cannot concentrate on my breathing for more then 5 seconds.

Honestly I don’t know what the frequency of thoughts popping up is for others but mine seems very high. The whole thing just feels so superficial.

I really don’t know what to do, if I need to radically change my attitude or maybe try a different technique. Seeking helpful advice.

Thank you.”

You are right.

Trying to ignore your thoughts doesn’t feel right.

Try observing your thoughts neutrally.

Allow the unimportant thoughts to flow away.

Focus on the important thoughts.

Allow your mind to explore these thoughts.

Do this and you will find that your meditation feels natural.
