I keep falling asleep when I meditate, what do I do?

“Even if I meditate in the morning/afternoon after a long rest, drink coffee, and sit upright, I just keep falling asleep.

It always starts the same, I focus on my breath/surroundings, try to become aware and present, and observe my thoughts.

As I observe my thoughts, they begin spiralling and eventually, I start seeing things, like random images, and these images get clearer and eventually I’m caught in a dream and wake up.

What do I do to stop this?

I’m still really new to the whole meditation scene and honestly I don’t know if I’m doing it right.

I used to think meditation was the absence of thought, but youtube told me its simply existing and focusing on the breath, and I don’t get what that’s meant to do, like how is that affecting the mind and body?

I still don’t really know what meditation is or what it means.”

You need more sleep.

Falling asleep when meditating is a sign that you aren’t getting enough sleep.

A good indicator of how much sleep you are getting is how you wake up.

If you wake naturally you are getting enough sleep, if you need an alarm to wake you then you are not getting enough sleep.

Get more sleep and you will find that you can remain awake whilst meditating.

Meditation is giving your brain and mind the time and space to understand everything.

Doing this helps you feel calmer, healthier and clearer.

When meditating do not try to empty your mind or only focus on your breath.

Allow your thoughts and emotions to flow.
